During the last decades illegal deforestation and forest fires have resulted in the disappearance of more than half of the original rainforest of Indonesia. Although protected areas such as nature reserves and national parks have been set aside they constitute too small an area to have an affect, unfortunately the forest destruction is continuing at an alarming rate. If nothing is done to stop this, the Asian rainforest will vanish taking along with it orangutans’ home. You can do something! Take action! Buy a portion of a rainforest to ensure it is protected from further destruction.

The Indonesian rainforest is the world’s second largest with an area of 90 million hectares (90.000 m2); it represents 10% of the world’s rainforest. Deforestation, fires and illegal logging are destroying the forest at an unsustainable and unprecedented rate. Hundreds, it not thousands of animals and plant species are being threatened as the entire ecosystems is transformed into a desert.

Despite the fact that the problem is directly linked to the illegal practices in Indonesia, the truth is that the biggest importers of timbers are the USA, EU, China and Japan. Consumers and corporations that live in these countries present an enormous demand for cheap timber. An unfortunately, it is still quite legal to buy these illegally harvested products.

There is hope and there is an alternative. FSC certified timber, which guarantees that concern has been taken for ecological, economical and social factors, is so far the best solution to avoid buying the illegal timber.
