Cikananga: Noni & Dodo Get a New Enclosure

Cikananga Dec 2010 Cikananga Dec 2010

Orangutan Outreach is proud to support Noni & Dodo, two amazing orangutans being cared for at the Cikananga Wildlife Rescue Center.  As you can see from the photos, they are getting huge.

Their old cage was not big enough for them and they were starting to break out with alarming frequency... When the Cikananga staff told us the situation was critical, we decided that the best solution would be to build them a new enclosure.

Many thanks to the awesome staff at Cikananga-- Resit, Willemijn, Iing, the vets & all the keepers-- and to Darno, O-Team member from JAAN (Jakarta Animal Aid Network). Darno is the magician behind this amazing new enclosure. Thanks also to Femke and Simon.

Noni and Dodo made the big move this past weekend. They were gently sedated and went through routine medical checks while asleep. Everything went as planned and they absolutely LOVE their new home. They spend all day playing and moving around, swinging on the tires and splashing around in the water! When the second enclosure is ready later this month, they will have even more space.

Orangutan Outreach is grateful to all our generous supporters who help us help Noni & Dodo....

Thank you so much!  Rich  {:(|}  {:(|)   <-- Dodo & Noni

*Special thanks to Willemijn & Iing for the report and photos...

A few more pictures of the outside area. The water in the pond was drained before Noni and Dodo were moved here as a safety precaution.

We made some holes in the bars so that we can provide bigger fruit and treats on  top of the cage so that Noni and Dodo can pull them through the holes

Bamboo with holes where we can put peanuts, honey, and mealworms-- yum!

On the 11th of December Noni and Dodo were moved to their new cage

Collecting blood samples, and a groggy Noni slowly waking up

In the afternoon when Dodo and Noni where totally awake we let them out of the inside area into the big outside area. This was such a great moment for them-- and for us. It was truly amazing to see their reaction to their new enclosure, and all the space and enrichment...

On the 12th of December we filled the pool with water. We had decided to wait for a day because we were afraid of accidents because they had just come out of sedation.
