This story fits right in with the one from a few weeks ago about the 'celebrity' orangutans being given to the Great Ape Trust to live out their natural lives without having to 'perform' for humans ever again...

While I rarely beleive anything PETA says, I'm sure some abuse does go on in the training. I also think it depends a lot more on the trainer and the company. Most are out to make money, not care for animals. So many people are worried about money, than any animal is not even a second thought, so abuse like this continues.
I doubt the movie industry will get to involved with this because it is a pretty shallow industry. Money, fame, and getting the next movie out is all they consider. If you have ever worked with the production or lived in a location where a movie is filmed you would know this to be true.
I think with computer animation trainers for wild animals will be a dying breed. Hopefully this will happen quickly.
