What Comes Next?
If you have been following Animal Planet’s show Orangutan Island you will know that our friends there are more or less ready to be released into the wild. To do this, Orangutan Outreach and BOS Foundation need YOUR HELP. It costs more than $2000 to release each orangutan but you can make a difference by donating any amount to reach this goal. Currently we take care of almost 800 orangutans and we would like to be able to rehabilitate and release them all with your help. Donate for their release
The release sites must meet a number of criteria. Most importantly, they have to be free from human beings. Additionally, the forest must be subjected to a limited amount of human impact and there must be a diversity of fruits and plants that can feed the orangutans. The site also needs to be in the orangutans’ native Borneo to prevent genetic crossing with other wild orangutan populations. Finding areas that meet these requirements is time consuming and quite costly. Once such an area has been found, the difficult task of getting the orangutans to the site begins. It is by definition almost always a very remote area. Helicopters or small planes that can land on nearby rivers have to be used.
However, due to the fact that the rainforest is disappearing fast it is becoming harder and harder to find appropriate release sites. All the more reason for you to help us! Any funds you donate towards the releases will be used for pre-release surveys and post-release monitoring, which will hopefully include subcutaneous microchips implanted in released animals so that we can keep track of them throughout their new life in the wild. In addition there are other areas where your donation will be used such as veterinary care, food, medicine, monitoring and many more.If we cannot find appropriate release sites, the rehabilitation center will become overrun with orangutans, and someday soon we will have to turn away orangutans that desperately need our intervention. We need funds to put them back in the wild; otherwise we will fail the orangutans. And we can’t fail them….

Disclaimers: Money collected for orangutans will be used for medicine, food, equipment, rescue operations, cages and hundreds of other items that are necessary to rehabilitate the orangutans and keep the projects going. A minimal amount will be used for administrative costs in the US to continue to build up the organization so that we can rescue and rehabilitate even more orangutans.
