Sabangau – Forest Fires Update 1
Thank you to everyone who has made a donation to fight the forest fires in Sabangau. We’ve been able to raise many thousands of dollars because of YOUR generosity.
We are currently supporting the ongoing efforts of CIMTROP. In coming days we will also be keeping an eye on the situation in other sections of Central, West and East Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo)– especially the region surrounding Samboja Lestari.

Fighting Fires!
From Tuesday, Sept 22:
“Fires situation has decreased since a week ago, because there was rain in Palangka Raya. But, recently the wild fires become uncontrolled in our area that the fires started since 20th Sept afternoon. Our team, with the entire team is trying as much as possible to secure and save this area, but the fires spread very fast and the wind moved rapidly that we were not able to lead and being overwhelmed block the fires at the moment.”
“We really missed on the 20th afternoon, since most of the stammers has took the Idul Fitri holiday so there was little active in the field. Until now, the whole of team has worked very hard all day and night and one person was injured. We tried to securing two towers and several research equipments. Some areas of our reforestation project have been burned.”
“I’m personally indeed truly sad with the worst situation. All of the TSA team with the power limited, hardly able to extinguish the fires at this location. I shall come to Kalampangan to discuss with my team about our next plan…”
And from Wednesday, Sept 23:
“Big fire started from our research transect, spread across middle of Taruna canal and trans Kalimantan highway up to dams 3&4. Fire speed is around 1 km per hour supported by strong wind all day. Now I am working at night with my team. The tree regeneration plot expected all burned but cannot see yet.”
