Background Story

Topan arrived at the BOS Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in October 2017 after being rescued from Sigi Village in Central Kalimantan. She was only eight months old at the time and was found weak and alone near a riverbank. A medical examination revealed that she was suffering from dehydration and malnutrition, and she required immediate care upon arrival.

During her early months in rehabilitation, Topan quickly showed signs of confidence and determination. After completing quarantine, she joined the nursery group, where she became known for her curiosity, strong climbing ability, and eagerness to explore. As she progressed into Forest School, Topan continued to stand out for her independence and willingness to venture farther into the forest than many of her peers.

Over time, she developed excellent foraging, climbing, and nest-building skills, advancing steadily through the Forest School levels and preparing for the next stage of rehabilitation.

Topan Today

Topan is now living on Bangamat Pre-Release Island, where she has entered the final stage of rehabilitation. Calm, confident, and highly capable, she has adapted well to island life and often prefers quieter areas away from frequent activity.

She is commonly seen around Feeding Platform Seven, where she quickly gathers fruit before retreating to a nearby tree to eat. Outside of feeding times, Topan explores different parts of the island independently, climbing trees and foraging throughout the forest. In the late afternoons, she reliably returns to her preferred area to build her night nest, choosing locations that offer peace and minimal disturbance.

With seasonal fruits such as Rangas and Gandis currently abundant along the island’s edges, Topan can often be found feeding near the riverbanks. Healthy, observant, and self-assured, she continues refining the skills she will need for full independence in the wild.
