SOCP: Another Sumatran Orangutan Born in the Wild!

We have more exciting news to share from the Jantho Orangutan Reintroduction Center.

The Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) has confirmed another wild birth from a rehabilitated Sumatran orangutan in the Jantho Nature Reserve in Aceh. The latest birth was recorded from Wenda, a rehabilitated female orangutan released in Jantho in 2014. This report comes shortly after the confirmation of Bulan’s infant in May 2026.

The birth of Wenda’s infant was confirmed on July 29 by SOCP’s Post-Release Monitoring (PRM) team as they spotted Wenda and her newborn through the forest canopy. The infant was estimated to be less than one week old and appeared healthy throughout an extensive observation period. The baby remained closely attached as Wenda moved naturally through the forest, which is just what we want to see!

Wenda was confiscated in 2009 when she was around one year old. She underwent rehabilitation at the SOCP Quarantine Center before being transferred to the Jantho Orangutan Reintroduction Centre in 2013. Wenda was then released into the wild in 2014. Since her release, Wenda has been regularly monitored by SOCP’s Post-Release Monitoring team and we are thrilled to see her become a mother.

To date, more than 190 rehabilitated Sumatran orangutans have been released into the Jantho Nature Reserve. With Wenda’s infant, eleven births have now been confirmed among reintroduced orangutans in Jantho. The happy occasion of two births within a few months of each other gives us much reason for hope. As SOCP states, “It shows that rehabilitated orangutans, when given the opportunity to return to their natural habitat, can survive, reproduce, and contribute to the establishment of a new wild population.”
