BOS Foundation’s Baby Houses

The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) manages two orangutan centers, Nyaru Menteng in Central Kalimantan and Samboja Lestari in East Kalimantan, each caring for orangutans of all ages. Nyaru Menteng is the largest orangutan rescue and rehabilitation center in the world. It was featured on Animal Planet’s Orangutan Island and Orangutan Diaries, and the Smithsonian Channel’s Orangutan Jungle School. Thanks in no small part to each of these fantastic series, the world fell in love with orangutans— especially the babies!

In the fall of 2015, catastrophic forest fires and haze left many young orangutans in Borneo orphaned. The area around Nyaru Menteng was hit especially hard and BOSF rescued many infants, bringing the baby group to 23 orangutans. More babies kept arriving and the decision was made to build a bigger Baby House to accommodate all of the babies and provide them with the 24-hour tender loving care they desperately needed. With Orangutan Outreach’s support, the new Baby House at Nyaru Menteng opened in August 2017 when 16 baby orangutans moved into their new home.

Thankfully, in recent years, the number of orphaned babies needing rescue by BOSF has decreased. The Nyaru Menteng Baby House remains ready to house all the current babies and receive any new arrivals. Orangutan Outreach also supports the Baby House at Samboja Lestari. This facility does not care for as many babies, but is equally as impressive. In both locations, the Baby House facilities include quarantine buildings, food preparation areas, indoor play space, and outdoor Forest School locations. Since being taken away from their mothers and out of the forest, the BOSF Baby Houses provide a safe home for the little ones. The special Baby Houses provide an environment where the precious babies receive the dedicated love and care they need to be healthy, happy and confident young orangutans.

You can see the babies in action streaming in Orangutan Jungle School!

You can directly support the BOS Baby Houses by adopting one of the residents for just USD $20/month or USD $200/year. Learn more about the adoption program on our adoption page. Funds from the adoptions of Selfie, Rumba, Galaksi, Jenny, Monyo and Baimah will be allocated to the BOS Foundation.
