Bored in Borneo

Orangutans are critically endangered in the wild.

Orangutans only live in two places: the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Sumatra is the westernmost island in the Indonesian archipelago. Borneo is a massive island that is shared between Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. The majority of wild orangutans live in the Indonesian provinces, referred to locally as Kalimantan.

In recent years, both islands have been devastated by deforestation, mining and land conversion. Pristine old growth rainforest has been turned into oil palm plantations for as far as the eye can see...

Our Bored Ape Ambassador Julius has been very busy in the Metaverse and Twitter Space. He made a list of things to do in Borneo when you're bored.

  1. Rescue orphaned and displaced orangutans
  2. Rehabilitate them so they can be returned to the wild
  3. Release them into safe areas of protected forest
  4. Retirement: Build large, forested enclosures for unreleasable orangutans
  5. Reforestation — FOREST FOR THE FUTURE - Restore large areas of forest that were burned in years past for future orangutan habitat
  6. Rapid Response - Work with local villagers to prevent forest fires
  7. Raise Awareness among and empower local youth conservationists and activists. Check out COP Academy
  8. Reach Out - Partner with local farmers on sustainable agriculture practices to grow fruit for orangutans being cared for at the sanctuaries
  9. Respect for the Law - Collaborate with local attorneys to work within the Indonesian legal system to protect critically endangered orangutans
  10. Research - assist academics with field work

Still bored? Julius is keeping busy in Sumatra, too! Check out the Orangutan Haven.
